These issues are common immediately after dermal filler injections and should resolve over the next few days to weeks. Your final result will be seen at about 4 weeks after treatment, and you can be evaluated again to see if further treatments are required to achieve desired results.
Important to do: Drink plenty of water and keep your skin hydrated (moisturize heavily and apply lip balm on lips)
Pain is usually mild and sometimes moderate after filler injections. Some areas can be quite painful, like the chin and the lips. If indicated, tylenol may be used to help reduce pain.
For redness, welts, and itching – any over the counter topical or oral antihistamine (such as benadryl, zyrtec, claritin, etc.) may be helpful to treat these symptoms.
Apply a cool compress for 10 minutes every hour on the day of treatment (do not directly apply ice on your skin). A cool compress applied regularly for the first 24 hours after treatment may help reduce swelling. Some patients use arnica tablets before and after treatment to reduce swelling.
Most people have minimal to no bruising and can resume normal activity the following day. Bruising may occur and can last up to 7- 10 days. Apply ice to reduce pain, swelling and bruising. It is important to understand bruising will not affect the final result of the filler. It just takes time for the bruise to resolve. Patients on aspirin, fish oil or other drugs associated with increased bleeding may find their risk increased. For the treatment of bruising, there are over the counter treatments available, including arnica or DerMend cream.
Avoid touching, picking, or applying pressure for 6 hours after treatment. Massage of the filler areas may or may not be advised by your injector. Gentle massage may be used once the pain and tenderness has resolved and if advised by your injector.
This may sound scary but is not uncommon! Over the course of 1-2 weeks post treatment, lumps or bumps may appear and usually resolve on their own. Most lumps are due to swelling or bruising, and they usually resolve spontaneously. If you feel lumpy spots develop 24 hours after treatment, gently massage the area with minimal pressure for about two minutes.
There is a small risk that dermal filler treatments may induce an outbreak of facial cold sores in patients with a known or unknown medical history of the virus that causes cold sores. For a known history of cold sores, specific medications may need to be prescribed by your doctor and should be taken prior to and following the treatment in order to suppress reactivation of an infection from this virus.
Routine re-evaluation of the results of dermal filler should be performed at 4 weeks post procedure. Emergencies, such as infection or vascular occlusions, should be reviewed immediately.
An evaluation prior to 4 weeks is often not useful, as swelling is often still present. Results cannot be assessed until swelling has fully resolved. This is particularly important with regards to evaluation of facial symmetry.
Retreatment should occur at any time between 3-6 months after your first treatment. Once peak filler has been achieved (and after maintenance injections), you can space out your dermal filler treatments annually or as you see fit in optimizing your results.
In very rare occasions, complications can include vascular occlusion and infection. Vascular occlusions mostly occur immediately during treatment. Your injector will provide expedited treatment and/or referral to reverse the complication. The area may appear discolored or skin can begin to develop a fishnet stocking appearance. After an occlusion develops, the skin may develop small blisters. If you notice any of these abnormalities noted above, please call SKM and/or 911 immediately.
Early infections may occur a few days after treatment. An infection typically presents as inflammation, redness, tenderness, warmth, or with nodules or pus-like discharge. If you notice any of these abnormalities noted above, please call SKM immediately.
Expectations are important to discuss with your injector prior to any treatment! Every patient is unique and there may be a possibility of poor or inadequate response with hyaluronic acid products. Keep in mind that additional treatments may be necessary. As mentioned, treatment with dermal fillers provides temporary smoothing out of facial folds and wrinkles, adds volume to the lips, cheeks, and chin, and contours facial features. Fillers provide temporary effects, but fillers cannot reverse or permanently stop the natural course of aging.
